The
foresitters of Venezuela and Guyana are having a meeting on Thursday to
talk about the rightful ownership of each of their land holdings. While
their fight over land ownership goes back many years, it has been fired
back up lately owing to oil found nearby.
The land being fought over is on the western side of Guyana, near the
Esequibo waterway. This land was held by the British when they were
running Guyana. But since Guyana won their self ownership 1966,
Venezuela has been fanding to get the land back.
The Esequibo land is mostly empty wilderness with few folks living
there. However the offshore rights that go with this bit of land are of
great worth, as hoards of oil have been found there. While Venezuela
has the wherewithal to gather the oil, Guyana does not want to lose out.
Venezuela's foresitter, Nicolas Maduro, is set to meet with Guyana's
foresitter, Irfaan Ali, on the Saint Vincent island, the main island of
the Grenadines. Hopefully a deal can be made soon before the fight gets
any hotter.
