The
foresitter of Catalonia, Pere Aragones, has broadened their water
withholdings to Barcelona and nearby lands. While Catalonia has been
under a drought for a few years now, lately their water stocks have
almost run dry. This call for heightened water withholdings marks a
true worsening of Catalonia's standing.
The Sau lake, one of Catalonia's biggest stocks of water, is down to
only 9% full, and Catalonia's overall water holdings is not much
higher. The water withholdings call for a banning of watering at
playingrounds, the shutting down of nearly all swimming pools, and even
a lowering of watering fields that grow food. However, trees will go on
getting water so they don't die.
Last summer, all of Europe was hit by harsh heatwaves, leading many
riches to go into a drought. But Spain was hit harder than most, and
Catalonia even moreso, as they were already dried out, and running low
on water from former years of heatwaves. The ongoing dearth of rain is
leading to great hardship for folks living there.
