Early
Tuesday morning, a freight ship leaving Baltimore swerved off its path
and struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, leading to nearly the whole
thing falling down. There were at least 6 folks on the bridge when it
fell down, 2 were found dead, and the others are still missing but
thought to be dead.
The driver of the ship is said to have called for a tugboat to help,
owing to the ship losing might and drifting. The call for help was not
soon enough, however, as the ship soon drifted into one of the main
shafts holding up the bridge. Without the backing of this shaft, the
bridge quickly tore itself asunder and fell into the Patapsco Waterway.
Following this mishap, the shipping business, Maersk, saw its stock
worth drop by 2%.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge was heavily wayfared, with Highway 695
running over it. Also, Baltimore Harbor is now cut off from worldwide
shipping. Both wains and ships will have to find new pathways to get
where they need to go until cleanup is done and a new bridge can be
built.
