At
least eight skiers were killed by a snowslide near Lake Tahoe in
California. Altogether there were 15 skiers, but only six made it out
alive, and one has not yet been found. The one that is still missing is
thought to most likely be dead.
The team of skiers had been sheltering near Frog Lake before they began
heading back to the pathhead to go home. The snowslide happened near
Castle Peak on Tuesday morning amid a heavy snow storm that had been
ongoing for days.
The outlivers wielded their plight beacons to make themselves known and
their backup farspeakers to send writs for help. They were found
huddled in a makeshift shelter of watershedding sheets. Two of the
outlivers had harsh wounds and were taken straight to a sickhouse.
Although snowslides happen pretty often in the barrows of California,
the death toll is seldom this high. The last time there were eight
deaths from a snowslide was in 1911. If the last skier is not found
alive, this will be the deadliest snowslide in California's yorelore.
